Painting Description - Frida Kahlo

In this post we’ll talk about one of Frida Kahlo’s paintings. The picture is called Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird.
This picture was made in 1940 by Frida Kahlo. It is a self-portrait of Frida wearing a necklace of thorn and a hummingbird. She’s surrounded by large green leaves, a monkey and a black cat. The picture is a symbol of Frida herself. It expresses pain, that’s why the hummingbird, which is always colorful, is black and lifeless.

Art In Churches

This year we learned about lots of types of arts. One of them was the Art in Churches.

Our class went to three types of Churches to see the paintings on the walls and on the roof. Of course that not all of them had paintings on those places. One of the churches had wood carvings of saints and angels, and it had massive wood boards with passages from the Bible. Another church had lots of beautiful paintings on the walls and on the roof. The other church had paintings too, but those ones were older and in a bad condition. Despite the bad condition, it was a pretty church too.

Our Talks

Our Talks is a particular event that happens in our school. It’s based on TED Talks but is done by the students of first and second years of high school. They have 5 to 10 minutes to talk about something according to the theme. For example, this year the theme was the culture of peace.

They talked about education, respect, and a lot of other things. There was this girl that talked about education, how it’s being applied (in Brazil) and how it should be applied. There were two girls that talked about education for girls that do not have education yet. A boy talked about the “culture” of calling people homophobic, racist, fascist, Nazi or other things, just because of what they think or something that they say.
